Trainer @winans_h80 performing a Lactic Retention (LR) set. We first learned about this technique from @cal.dietz . The LR training technique is fairly advanced and is recommended to be used in an intelligent and progressive off-season training program.

Lactic training is very hard to recover from, but when you do it promotes an anabolic response (physiological increase) in your body. The goal is to increase the anabolic hormones such as testosterone and human growth hormone (yes females too). Here Hunter performed 2 sets of each exercise: 15 reps of barbell RDL’s, and then immediately into a band assisted hamstring stretch for 30 sec.

There are really just 3 ways to elicit a maximum voluntary muscle contraction. The first is by performing an exercise at a true 1 Rep Maximum. That is very intense on the body and really can’t be performed frequently.

The second is by performing reps to failure. This is exhausting, but can be performed more frequently than a 1RM. This option can potentially allow for varying energy systems to be used, so might not translate into goals perfectly.

The third option is by contracting as fast as possible. This can be done very frequently and safely. You can use velocity to gauge fatigue levels and train the exact energy system for your goals. Here trainer @winans_h80 is using @trainwithpush to measure the speed of the Hexbar reps. Velocity based training arguably translates into sports performance better than the previous two maximum muscle contractions.
